PortfolioInteractive Multimedia combines all of the disciplines that we have years of experience with, graphics, animation, photography, audio and video into one small interactive package. One of its advantages and our strengths is the ability to incorporate existing media into a new dynamic presentation, often saving time and money in the process. We have produced a variety of Interactive Multimedia presentations that helped clients to train, explain, motivate and sell new products. Alstom Power"Alstom Gold" Interactive CD-ROMThis product introduction CD-rom was created to send to potential customers worldwide. It introduces new technology and procedures for monitoring the performance and predicting the deterioration of turbines and generators enabling timely preventative maintenance in place of costly breakdowns.
It incorporates text, graphics, photgraphy and video to show potential customers, in great detail, how the system works. Frequent reproduction orders are an indication of the success of this interactive multimedia presentation. read case study for "Alstom Gold"
Expanding Markets Worldwide For a manufacturer of Turbine Diagnostics equipment, we increased sales worldwide and cut down on expensive and time-consuming sales calls. This company had an exciting new product with the potential for sales wherever electricity is generated, if it's benefits could be explained to a highly technical audience. We produced an interactive CD-Rom that incorporates animation, colorful graphics, video, still photography and our client's existing PDF technical documents, providing potential customers with a colorful overview as well as in depth technical papers on the benefits of the new product. Sensitivity to our worldwide audience and the large amount of technical information included were factors that influenced simple, intuitive interface design and content development. The success of the first English CD-Rom has justified the production of a Spanish version.Reynolds Metals Company"Flexible Packaging " Interactive CD-ROMThis presentation was created to promote Reynolds flexible packaging capabilities for the cigarette industry. It incorporates graphics and full motion video to illustrate Reynolds high speed foil laminating process in addition to providing an overview of the Packaging Divisions capabilities.
The presentation is used for live presentations and mailed to potential customers worldwide. read case study for "Flexible Packaging"
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words For a manufacturer of laminated foil cigarette wrapping papers we produced a CD-Rom that shows their new high-speed laminating machine in action. Now salesman can send or show the presentation in person to potential customers all over the world, enabling them to see the many benefits of this new machine and the product it turns out, without traveling to Virginia. The presentation incorporates a colorful interactive schematic of the machine that opens windows to video with audio that describes the laminating process every step of the way. It also includes video testimonials that speak to the company's commitment to quality and ability to deliver. Seeing this new machine in action and hearing directly from management has opened doors to many new clients all over the world.STIHL, Incorporated"STIHL TERRITORY" Interactive KioskThis presentation was created to attract attention to Stihl's tradeshow exhibit and gather attendee information. It provides information on Stihl products and services in addition to asking questions and storing data on attendees' interests, preferences and region of Stihl Territory.
It incorporates computer animation, video and audio SFX to create an aggressive, outdoor power equipment experience. read case study for "STIHL TERRITORY"
The Electronic Salesman For this manufacturer of outdoor power equipment, in a year that was sparse on new product and program introductions, we produced an interactive kiosk to attract attention at trade shows. The kiosk was created to serve as an "electronic salesman" by presenting the company, its' products and programs in an exciting, innovative way, (it was the only interactive kiosk at the trade show it was produced for). In addition to presenting product lines, benefits, and videos of product in use, on safety and Timber Sports competition, visitors were encouraged to answer questions that created a database of useful information on those people who attended the show. This project became the prototype for an in-store kiosk program for the manufacturers nationwide network of dealers.Invensys"Control Works " CD-ROM
New Product Introduction
This 12 minute linear presentation was created to introduce the concept and initial software package that enables appliance manufacturers to design and incorporate modular, reprogrammable appliance controls into their products.
The presentation incorporates complex computer animation sequences, full motion video and audio SFX to create the look and feel of life in the future with advanced appliance controls. read case study for "STIHL TERRITORY"
Life in the Future For a manufacturer of electronic appliance controls we produced a CD-Rom to explain the benefits of an exciting new concept in electronic appliance design and manufacturing. Our audience was worldwide, the message complex, therefore we relied on the simplicity of graphics, animation and photography to explain the concept and describe the product. We created the look and feel of "Life In The Future" with programmable appliance controls, to illustrate the benefits of our new concept and to sell an initial software package that will enable manufacturers to test and employ the new technology. The CD-Rom was shown to audiences at International Trade shows and mailed to potential and existing customers. It has generated new sales and much enthusiasm for this innovative new product.
A.T. MASSEY COAL COMPANY"The Energy to Win" video
This 16 minute video was created to celebrate the success of three programs [S-1 (safety), P-2 (productivity), and M-3 (measurement)] that Massey implemented 2 years earlier. Massey Energy Company "Focusing on the Future" Sales / Marketing BrochureMassey Energy Company is a Richmond, Virginia based coal production company. Over the years we have produced multi-image slide shows, videos and print materials for various Massey endeavors. We provided design, copy, location photography and print coordination for this Sales/ Marketing brochure which is used to attract customers worldwide.

Employee Magazine Christmas CoversOvernite Trucking Company is a Richmond, Virginia based, nationwide long and short haul trucking company.
Case StudiesWe are proud of our history and ability to provide useful IT solutions. We explore all opportunities to provide innovative and profitable applications that exceed our client’s expectations. Here are some examples:Dominion ResourcesNuclear simulation and fuel analysis systemFor Dominion Resources, Data Directions created a custom application named "Warden" to improve their nuclear simulation and fuel analysis process. Their original process involved manually editing text files, copying and pasting data into spreadsheets, and stitching together the output from multiple applications from different vendors. This combination made the work tedious, error-prone, and time-consuming. Data Directions worked with Dominion's Nuclear Analysis and Fuel division to identify areas of improvement and opportunities to automate much of the work. The result was the Warden application, which provides a streamlined workflow within a single application. The application builds on top of their existing programs and replaces other tools entirely, cutting down on errors and saving time as well. Warden even implemented new safety measures and improved the efficiency of Dominion's existing peer review process. Since Warden has been introduced, Dominion has begun to identify other internal processes that could benefit from integration and automation in a similar fashion. Covington International TravelCustomer DatabaseCovington International Travel is one of the top 25 U.S. travel management companies as ranked by airline ticket sales, and is regarded as one of the premier travel agencies in the United States. Data Directions, Inc. designed and built a custom application to centralize the modification and storage of customer information. The new system, named Maestro, interfaces to many internal and several external data sources to allow Covington’s travel agents to access their customers’ information from one location. The project started as a feasibility study and progressed to successive stages of analysis, design, coding, and implementation. DDI managed this process and provided the primary technical development and currently supports the application. Maestro has provided Covington with unprecedented ease of access and analytical capabilities for their customer information data. Appalachian LabsWater Quality SystemAppalachian Labs is a state certified water testing laboratory in Beckley, West Virginia. Primarily servicing the coal industry. Appalachian Labs collects and analyzes water samples to ensure compliance with EPA mandated limits of chemicals and metals from mine runoffs. Data Directions developed a custom application (the Water Quality System) that would assist in the collection, analysis, reporting, and accounting of the water samples tested by Appalachian Labs. Some of the primary benefits afforded Appalachian Labs and their clients by the Water Quality System include:Appalachian Lab’s clients have immediate access to their sample results via a secured website.Appalachian Lab’s clients are notified automatically if their sample exceeds EPA standards.Appalachian Labs sends reports in .pdf format via email to clients instead of printed reports.Appalachian Labs can generate the mandated NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) reporting in minutes instead of days.Duplicate sample entry into a supporting billing system has been eliminated.Formatted interface files are sent to some clients to allow additional historical and trend analysis of the water samples. Overall the Water quality system reduced data entry effort, allowed greater access for clients to their data, and reduced the effort to create the mandated reports James River EquipmentEquipment Management System
Data Directions, designed and developed an Equipment Management System for James River Equipment that operates a network of fourteen John Deere equipment dealerships.
The application tracks and manages heavy equipment inventory from receipt to sales. The primary functions/modules in the application are a powerful search function to identify equipment with specific attributes, a rental module that tracks consumer rental of the equipment, move log processing that tracks the physical location of all equipment, a work order module that tracks the type and cost of work done to each machine, and a sales analysis module that records details of consumer sales.
The application was developed using Visual Studio.Net utilizing C#.Net, VB.Net, XML, Office Excel, and a SQL Server database. The application consists of over 50 tables and uses approximately 75 views, 250 stored procedures, and 25 User Defined Functions. United Dominion Realty TrustProperty Book Application
United Dominion Realty owns and manages over 200 apartment complexes across the United States. Data Directions, designed, developed and implemented an online “Property Book” System that tracks extensive detailed information regarding each apartment complex. Information such as detailed infrastructure type and condition, appliance type and condition, recommendations to hold or sell the complex, budget information, and digital pictures of the property are managed in the application. Before the application was developed, UDR maintained this information in a series of large and unwieldy spreadsheets that were obsolete before they were printed and distributed. The application is hosted on UDR’s Intranet and has built in security that restricts employees to view and modify only the appropriate information for their region of the country and role within the organization. This Property Book application allows UDR immediate access to the type of data that support the requisite analysis for managing and leveraging their property portfolio. Massey Energy Company Sales Information SystemMassey Energy Company is the 4th largest coal company in the United States and uses an application designed, built, implemented and supported by Data Directions. This application supports the coal sales, shipping, sales accounting and accounts receivable for this large and dynamic organization. This system greatly enhances the automation supporting their coal sales, shipping, and accounting activities providing "cradle to grave" reporting from sales to accounts receivable. The system is robust, highly scalable, and uses an email interface to automate data entry of shipping information, aiding the user community by reducing the need to re-key information. The project was delivered in stages and evolved and grew in scope as new opportunities for sophistication and business needs were identified.

Case StudiesWe have enjoyed long-term business relationships with a large and varied group of training services clients for over twenty years. Independent Container LineData Directions has assisted Independent Container Line Ltd, a multinational company that transports containerized cargo via ship between the USA and western Europe, with transition of its antiquated in-house software applications to modern technologies and platforms.
ICL’s Compass application, a significant portion of which was designed and developed by Data Directions consultants, helps ICL personnel in the USA, the United Kingdom and Belgium manage the movement of containers, cargo and ships. Automated interfaces between the Compass application and ICL business partners streamline business interactions, while saving time and reducing communication errors. The bilingual (English and German) website www.icl-ltd.com, which was designed and developed by Data Directions, leverages Compass information and allows registered ICL customers to quickly and easily track the progress of their containers from pickup to delivery. DDI consultants continue to provide help desk and Compass maintenance support, allowing ICL to focus on its core business and Compass to evolve with it. CWD KidsData Directions took over maintenance of the CWDKids commercial web site in 2007. Aside from keeping the CWDKids website running smoothly, Data Directions has implemented several changes designed to enhance the customer experience and increase sales. In addition, we have worked with CWDKids to explore additional sales channels such as Google and Yahoo, and have employed various security measures to protect the company and customers from cyber attacks.
However, at Data Directions we see ourselves as more than mere caretakers of our client’s websites. Therefore, we actively partner with CWDKids to suggest ways to leverage technology to increase sales and decrease costs. Our goal is to use technology to make CWDKids more successful.
ColorTreeFor ColorTree, Data Directions bridges the gap between the commercial software packages and ColorTree's internal management reporting needs. Ancillary reporting and applications were provided to assist with ColorTree's Theory of Constraints management philosophy allowing them to plan their sales techniques and production scheduling to maximize resources, revenue, and customer satisfaction. While the scheduling package is accurate, it is less accommodating for last minute schedule changes so we developed a method to allow supervisors to make manual changes rearranging and customizing the schedule as needed.
Where appropriate, areas of automation have been identified to improve efficiency and reduce errors. For example, an account manager might provide the customer with custom package labeling, and to prevent standard labels from being created in the plant we can provide this additional information on the custom scheduling application. For standard labels, we created a labeling process that pulls the necessary information from the order configuration database so the employee no longer needs to key this information. When gathering materials for a particular day's jobs, in the past the supervisor needed to compile this information for every job and every machine on the schedule by manually looking at each job in the scheduling package. We created a report that lists it together in a concise manner all jobs for the day by resource, and the materials needed making it more accurate and efficient for the employee to prepare the machine.Cadmus CommunicationsCadmus has entrusted Data Directions with support for two of their mission-critical applications: the PDS Payroll System, and the CMS Print Scheduling System. PDS is a SQL Server-based package that runs the payroll for the entire company. Support services include generating ad-hoc reports and managing database archive and retrieval operations, as well as installation of patches and upgrades from PDS. Most recently, Data Directions has assisted in the migration of the payroll system from PDS to ADP. The migration required extensive data extract and conversion support.
CMS is an ASP-based custom software created specifically for Cadmus. It is used to automate the process of scheduling assets (printers, binders, etc.) for specific print jobs. Data Directions has taken over maintenance of the system and is currently engaged in fixing some serious bugs and enhancing the system to make it more accurate and easier to use.Massey EnergyFor Massey Energy Company, Data Directions created a custom Sales Information System (SIS) application to manage orders, tracking shipping, and creating invoices. Additional functionality tracks accounts receivable and all sales accounting including interfaces to ERP systems. This application replaced a legacy AS400 Mainframe system taking over 8 hours to produce month-end reports and provides real-time reporting from cradle to grave. The new system streamlined data entry of shipping information by electronically interfacing the data from shipping points, creating real-time month-end reports to facilitate a more efficient month-end close and provides more reporting and trend analysis than ever thought possible.
Old Dominion Electric CooperativeWhen Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) was looking to establish an intranet web site using SharePoint, they turned to Data Directions to provide them with web development expertise. Data Directions consultants installed and configured a SharePoint 2003 intranet site to offer the company’s employees, consultants, and business partners a higher level of web-enabled collaboration than was possible with their previous simple Windows-based network shared folders. When Microsoft released their enhanced Office SharePoint Services platform in 2007, Data Directions also migrated their intranet to this new environment. Seeing the value in the community-building and enhanced team dynamics that SharePoint-based sites can provide, ODEC also looked to Data Directions to help implement a public internet site (http://www.memberzone.coop) based upon Sharepoint MOSS 2007 with a completely customized look-and-feel to provide ODEC’s business partners with their own web space to use for collaboration, and in many instances, as an alternative or even replacement for their own internal intranet sites. And when ODEC realized that their public web site (www.odec.com) needed a facelift, they also looked to Data Directions’ programming and graphic design strengths to update their primary internet presence with the latest Web 2.0 technologies.
